The Visit:

The Undugu Mentorship Initiative in collaboration with the League of Young Professionals (LYP)-Mombasa Chapter on Saturday the 4th February 2012 invites all who have a heart for the Coast region to join us as we visit 3 schools in Mwatate and Voi regions. The theme for the visit is "A call for responsibility", calling upon all of us to be responsible role models to the younger members of our society. The team of mentors meet for a briefing at 5.00am at Makupa Petrol Station, Mombasa and head to Voi, a 2 hours drive.

The team will be segmented into two groups: group A heads to Mwangea Secondary School which is within Voi town while group B heads to Mwandango Secondary School located at Kishamba, some 30Kms from Voi. After the morning session, the two groups converge at Kenyatta High School, Mwatate for a joint afternoon session. After the joint session, the team will leave Mwatate for the 3 hour journey back to Mombasa.

Group A is expected to begin their mentorship activities at 9am at Mwangea Secondary. Group B is expected at Mwandango Secondary at 9.30am. Both schools are mixed schools with a population of around 250 each. There will be both formal presentations, group and focus discussions with the students. We encourage each mentor to identify at least 5 students whose progress they will monitor and guide after the visit.

Both groups converge at Mwatate town at 1pm ready for the afternoon session. The team is expected at Kenyatta High School at 2pm. The school has around 650 students, full boarding all boys. The school is among the few recently upgraded to National School status. There will be brief formal presentations followed by group and focus discussions. We encourage all mentors to identify a manageable number of students that they will monitor and guide after the visit.

  1. The major reasons for poor school performance at the Coast region are Attitude-related
  2. On this day alone, we have an opportunity to interact with more than 1,000 students.
  3. The effect of this interaction can transcend schooling period, sometimes creating completely new life and career opportunities for the mentee; with its positive results immeasurable.
  4. To successfully achieve this objective, we need to maximize the number of volunteer mentors.

We therefore appeal to each one of us to invite a friend to come along for this noble task. The 1 day return-trip costs only KSh.1,200 per volunteer. For confirmation of attendance, please reply to this e-mail.**Undugu-branded pilot shirts are also vailable on order at KSh.1,000/- per piece. Please e-mail your details to for your order.
