Kajire High School "The trip to Kajire was undeniably of its own kind. Just after the Junction (Mombasa-Voi highway), you hit a rough road heading to the interior. 6km we are told. The surroundings reminds me of a trip to Tsavo, with the rising picturesque Taita hills shaping the backdrop. Next time you are looking for a picnic site, this is the place. From a distance one can get the illusion of a basin. The region is served by three mixed secondary schools, Coast Secondary, Mwambiti and Kajire secondary. The smooth rough road is ideal for safari rally? reminds me of KCB rally.

Finally we arrive after a 6 km journey or so? We are ushered in by jovial guard and we proceed to the administration block. Luckily one of the teachers spots us and we head to her direction. We receive a cordial welcome followed by a brief introduction. We are about to offload our equipment when it dawns on us that the school has no power?hmmm change of plan. Quite a sad story to note that the entire school depends on three pressure lamps for their evening preps. The Solar panels that were installed some years back have since ceased working. (I wonder if the area MP is aware of this) (we can donate a few lamps--a thought) 3 year ago the only Laboratory was razed down by fire. Upto now the school has got no laboratory at all. Student are forced to do their practical?s over the weekend when one of the classroom is available. As all this is happening, Biology practical exam is in session in one of the converted class-cum- laboratory.

The KCSE performance has been on average for the last 2 years. We have no choice but to go back to our plan b. Students hurriedly gather under a shade and within a few minutes the Mentorship session kicks off. Introductions follow as each speaker delivers their presentations. The student are excited on learning that one of the speakers happened to have scored an A- in the2010 KCSE. Wow she becomes the hero of the day as each and every student yearns to hear from her. Finally her time comes and indeed you could tell how excited the students were. Hunger pangs are evident on the faces of some(Let me not mention), finally we break into groups with students asking various question concerning their career choices. Mrs Kianga is so excited and even quips by saying ?Hawa watoto wanauliza maswali kweli? ?

We promise to come back the soonest possible. We head to the ACK Taita Taveta KCSE Prize Giving ceremony held at the St Barthlomew Secondary School in Voi.
